• MAP testing continues this week for students in grades 2 through 5.
• Back to School Night will be Tuesday. Session one will start at 5:30 p.m. and session two at 6:30 p.m. Families can attend either session, or both if they have more than one child in the school.
• Identakid will be at Bluffton Elementary on Thursday.
• The PTO will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria.
• The school will host volunteer reader orientations at 10 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the media center. New and returning volunteers are encouraged to attend. • The school's fifth-graders will travel to The Church of the Cross to help distribute food at the food bank Tuesday.
• Students are allowed to dress down if they bring a $1 donation to school that will benefit Relay for Life.

EVENTS
• Heritage Academy high school students will hold grade-level meetings at noon Thursday for morning-session students and at 12:30 p.m. for the afternoon session students. Freshman will meet with Sarah Shea, advisor, in Room 108. Sophomores will meet with Dean Costakis and Carmen Halpin, co-advisors, in Room 105. Juniors will meet with Gloria Shoemaker, advisor, in the school library. Seniors will meet with Mary Polite, advisor, in Room 102.

EVENTS
• Music director James Berry will assist fourth-graders and parents with instrument rental from Portman's Music from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the band room. There will be a SmartMusic demonstration to follow at 7 p.m. in the media center for all band students and interested parents.
• A mandatory meeting for parents of fifth-grade students will be held in the media center at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. "Care of Frogs," a seminar for the "tween" year, will be presented by middle school principal Rhonda Stones and director of curriculum Debbie Liss. Parents of sixth-graders are also welcome to attend.
HELPING HANDS
• The Booster Club is looking for volunteers to help with the second annual silent auction to be held Sept. 18 during the home football game against Hilton Head Preparatory School. Lisa Cooler is asking for help collecting donated items for auction and also willing hands that evening. Details: 843-726-5271.
• Jackie Cash is once again coordinating the Sally Foster fundraiser. This is a major fundraiser for PTF. Details: 843-682-3211.
• PTF asks all families that volunteer during the school year to log their time in the volunteer log book in the front lobby of the school.

• The PTA has kicked off its SEE Our Spirit Fundraiser. Students practice their letter-writing skills by sending out letters to family, friends and community asking for support for field trips and performances. ACHIEVEMENTS
• Vinny Krishna, Mac Orie, Catherine Sheehan, Emmett Askeland, Dorsey Barker and Samantha Kriney were elected by their peers to steer the Leadership Council this year.
• Hilton Head Prep sophomore Adam Oppenheimer has been invited to participate in the annual American Junior Academy of Science, held Feb. 18-22 in San Diego, Calif. Oppenheimer won this honor through participation in the S.C. Junior Academy of Science Paper Presentations. His paper, "Temperature Changes Resulting from a GaAlAs Laser in the Decontamination of a Failing Dental Implant," was also selected to be published by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. The American Junior Academy of Science is the only U.S. honor society recognizing America's premier high school students for outstanding scientific research.
• Hilton Head Prep students Katherine Jans, Andrea Keriazakos, William Langs, and Brittney Parker have been selected to take part in the 2009-10 Junior Leadership Program sponsored by the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce.
