Christians interested in how Bodie has paid off $60,000 worth of debt in 14 months and made his marriage stronger, as well as his bank account, might want to look a little closer to an upcoming financial seminar that begins Aug. 16.
Offered one night each week for 13 weeks, Financial Peace University returns about three times annually. Free child care is available during some of the classes.
"It's a Christian look at finance," Bodie said of the non-denominational class created by Dave Ramsey that is being adopted by many churches and secular organizations. Ramsey, a financial author, radio host and television personality, can be spotted in various media from Fox Business News TV to radio talk shows.
Bodie, who lives in Bluffton with his wife and three children, says paying down debt wasn't easy. "We have all sacrificed, including the kids."
"Some things that we have done to find extra money are: I work every chance I get. God has blessed our business and our faithfulness. We turned in a leased car early so we didn't have to pay for insurance or mileage, we bought a car that we could pay cash for and not have a car payment. We had yard sales. We don't eat out. We don't allow ourselves to need the things we really just want, and we don't buy things we want -- only things we need."
Learning how to be a grown-up with money is part of the program. "Children do what feels good, adults devise a plan and stick to it," said Bodie quoting Ramsey. "We have acted like children for far too long, most of us have no idea what it takes or what to do in order to achieve our life's goals. We must sacrifice now to win in the long run."
While the class does cost $110, Bodies says it's well worth it. "The average family pays off $5,300 in debt reduction and saves $2,700 during the 13-week class period."
Bodie works as a cardiac sonographer in Savannah. He also owns three businesses with his wife, Liz.
In addition to financial finesse, Bodie says the class brought him closer to his wife. They learned how to talk honestly about money, and how to make decisions as a family. "My wife and I handle all financial decisions -- any time money is spent.
"This has changed my life aside from my belief in Jesus and my life in Christianity, this has been the biggest change in my life," Bodie said. "It has helped us financially and it has helped my marriage tremendously."
