See the uniform colors each school will require

August 3, 2009

Mandatory uniforms will be part of back-to-school shopping lists this fall, when a districtwide uniform policy takes effect at public Beaufort County elementary and middle schools.

All county students should wear plain, polo-style collared shirts in solid colors, and khaki, black or navy pants, shorts or skirts, according to the policy. Each school chooses its own color combinations.

Several schools will recommend students wear shirts with school

logos, but no schools will require them.

Parents can avoid paying the 6 percent to 8 percent sales tax charged in South Carolina for many items used for school and college -- including clothing -- if they shop during the state's annual sales tax holiday. Families can buy uniforms tax-free from 12:01 a.m. Aug. 7 to midnight Aug. 9.

Uniforms will be required at district high schools in the fall of 2010.

Bluffton High School, however, will require students to wear uniforms this fall -- one year ahead of the other three high schools. The policy will be less strict than the requirement that takes effect this year for middle and elementary schools.

Bluffton High students must wear polo-style collared shirts and khaki, black, gray or white pants, shorts or skirts when school begins Aug. 17, principal Robert Anderson said. As long as the shirts have collars, they can be any color or pattern.

Beginning in fall 2010, Bluffton High will enforce the stricter, districtwide uniform policy that requires solid tops in school-approved colors, he said.
