The Inn at Palmetto Bluff was named the top resort in the U.S. and Canada in the World's Best Awards, a readers survey in "Travel + Leisure" magazine.

The inn also ranks No. 14 in the magazine's list of the world's best hotels.

"We are incredibly honored to be recognized by the discerning readers of Travel + Leisure," general manager Marty Wall said in a statement. "This is a testament to the skill and dedication of our staff."

The 14th annual awards are featured in the August issue of the magazine and were announced Friday morning on NBC's "Today Show."

During the five-minute televisionsegment, one of the magazine's editors pointed to the inn as a good destination for golfers, families and nature lovers.

"It did exceptionally well, not just in the U.S., but in the world," features editor Nilou Motamedtold host Matt Lauer.

As she spoke, video footage showed people boating, kayaking, biking and playing golf.

The awards are based on reader evaluations of guest rooms and facilities; location; service; restaurants and food; and value.

The winners will be honored at a ceremony July 21 at the Cooper Square Hotel in New York.

The inn is part of Palmetto Bluff, a 20,000-acre development that has its entrance off S.C. 46 and lies on the south side of the May River.

The inn features guest cottages, cottage suites and full-service village homes; an 18-hole golf course; and a waterfront restaurant, sports complex and spa.

Elsewhere in the Lowcounty, Charleston was ranked No. 4 among top cities in the U.S. and Canada.
