Tips?

Anyone with information about the break-ins should contact sheriff's Investigator Todd Calhoun at 843-842-4111, ext. 261, or call the non-emergency dispatch center at 843-524-2777. Anyone noticing suspicious activity in that area should contact the non-emergency center immediately.

Over the past several months, the Estill Beach Circle area of Bluffton has been the target of more than a dozen late-night break-ins, and in some cases, victims have awoken to find a man in their home.

It is unknown whether the crimes are connected, but most of the incidents share similarities, according to Cpl. Robin McIntosh, sheriff's spokeswoman.

Victims have reported late night break-ins with no forced entry and money being stolen. In some cases, a man ran after being spotted.

One victim claimed that between May 5 and June 6, someone stole $355 from her in repeated break-ins, a report said. The 62-year-old woman said that on several nights she heard noises coming from the second floor of her home and noticed money missing the next morning, a report said. There were never signs of someone forcing their way inside, the report said.

A 56-year-old woman told police she awoke June 9 to a rustling sound at the foot of her bed and saw a man rummaging through several shopping bags, a sheriff's report said.

The woman asked what the man was doing, and he ran away, the report said.

The most recent incident was reported Tuesday when a woman told deputies she awoke to a man standing at the foot of her bed.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said she had gone to bed around midnight and was startled awake around 2 a.m. with the figure in her bedroom. The woman said the man might have gotten in through an unlocked door.

When she screamed, he ran away, she said. Nothing was stolen, she said.

The man was described as being about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds, a news release said. The man's race and age are unknown because no one has been able to give a good description of him, McIntosh said.
