Players Am next week

Several of the world's top amateur golfers will be in Beaufort County July 6-12 for The Players Amateur at Belfair Golf Club's West course in Bluffton.

Beaufort's Mark Anderson won last year's tournament and will be back to defend his title. Also in the field is Oklahoma State rising junior Kevin Tway, son of veteran PGA Tour star Bob Tway, the 1995 Verizon Heritage champion.

Orlando's Sam Saunders, the grandson of Arnold Palmer, and John Kostis, the son of CBS on-air swing analyst Peter Kostis, will also be here.

There are at least eight entries from Australia, including national team members Dan Nisbet, Jordan Sherratt, Ryan McCarthy and Dan Beckmann.

Renovation plans made for Dataw courses

Dataw Island Club will close the Cotton Dike course in March 2010 for a renovation project, with a planned reopening in October 2010. The Morgan River course will close in March 2011, with a targeted reopening of October 2011.

The eight-month projects will concentrate on renovating 35 greens and resurfacing greens with MiniVerde grass, renovating all tee boxes with Zoysia grass, introducing a variety of Bermuda grass called Celebration to a total of 11 fairways from both courses, repairing of drainage and renovating of bunkers, replacing the irrigation system for both courses and installing pond erosion control measures in select ponds.

The renovation will also include the redesign and renovation of the club's practice area to feature a new short game facility.

The renovation project will be handled by former Augusta National superintendent Billy Fuller.

Dataw selling golf membership to non-property owners

Representatives of Dataw Island recently announced the release of a new membership category for prospective Dataw Island Club members.

Known as the Country Club Golf membership, this new, non-property owner membership category allows access to both the Morgan River and Cotton Dike golf courses and all dining venues on the island. The annual membership dues are $4,500.

Locals fail to qualify for Senior Open

A trio of local golfers failed to qualify for the 2009 USGA Senior Open at a sectional qualifier on Monday at Florence Country Club in Florence.

Bluffton's Tom McKnight, a Champions Tour regular, shot a 69 to miss the cut by three strokes. Paul Davies of St. Helena Island shot a 79 and Bluffton's Scott Erwin didn't turn in his card.

Just two golfers qualified for the tournament -- Charleston's Bert Atkinson with a 64 and Javier Sanchez of Tupelo, Miss., with a 65.

New bunkers coming to Indigo Run

The Golf Club at Indigo Run has scheduled greenside bunker renovations for later in the year.The entire project will take roughly three to four months to complete. While the project is under way, the course will remain open for play. For more information, call general manager Kevin Lavertu at 843-689-3500.

Golfers qualify for Amateur Championship

Beaufort's Rob Simmons and Bluffton's Chandler Vilcheck both qualified for the 95th Carolinas Amateur Championship last Thursday at sectional qualifying at Wyboo Golf Club in Manning.

Simmons shot a 36-33 -- 69 to tie for second place and Vilcheck had a 37-35 -- 72 to tie for 13th. Bluffton's Pratt Reed (74) and Hilton Head Island's Logan Daber (75) failed to qualify.

The Carolina Amateur Championship will take place July 8-12 at the Country Club of Charleston.

Long 43rd in Future Masters

Bluffton's Wesley Long fired a 71-79-76 -- 226 to finish 43rd in the 60th Future Masters held June 21-23 in Dothan, Ala.

The 13-14 year old division consisted of 126 junior golfers from around the world. Only three junior golfers from South Carolina got accepted in the field. The tournament field was cut to the top 72 players and ties after the second round. Richard Hubbard of Mount Pleasant also made the cut and finished 56th.

Kaufman 33rd in eGolf Tour event

Bluffton's Cory Kaufman took 33rd place in the eGolf Professional Tour's Spring Creek Championship on Saturday at Spring Creek Golf Club in Gordonsville, Va. Kaufman shot a 72-69-69-74--284 to finish 12 strokes behind winner Roberto Castro of Alpharetta, Ga., winning $2,600.

Local golfers compete in Junior Championship

Hardeeville's Johnathan Phillips tied for fifth place in the 12 and younger division of the 2009 Carolinas Junior PGA Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Course in Myrtle Beach.

Phillips shot a 38-43--81 to finish five strokes behind winner Caleb Proveaux of Leesville.

Blufffton's Brenden Fick tied for seventh place with an 85.

In the girls 13-15 division, Bluffton's Lily Bartell took sixth place with a 173, finishing 26 strokes behind the winner. In the 16-18 class, Bluffton's Jenny Payne tied for fifth with a 156, seven shots off the lead.

Fick third in Hurricane tour event

Hilton Head Island's Jason Fick took third place in the boys 16-19 division of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's stop held June 22-23 at Wild Dunes Golf Club in Isle of Palms. Fick shot a 72-81--153 to finish eight stokes behind winner Reed Kerwin of Mt. Pleasant.

Collars place fourth in father-son event

Hilton Head Island's Bob Collar and Bluffton's Justin Collar took fourth place in the South Carolina Golf Association's Father Son Championship on June 25 at The Windermere Club in Blythewood. The Collars shot a 39-36--75 in Division II. Hilton Head Island's Jim and Jamie Manning also played, finishing with a 76.
