A 22-year-old Ridgeland man was charged with reckless driving stemmed from a wreck Wednesday on Hilton Head Island that sent six to the hospital, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The man who was ticketed was driving a 1997 Ford Mustang and tried to pass several cars along the west lane U.S. 278 at about 3:30 p.m. and struck a 2000 Pontiac minivan while it was waiting to turn onto Squires Pope Road, Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said.

The minivan driver, a 68-year-old Hilton Head woman, and her three passengers, including a 7-year-old girl and a 11-year-old girl was taken to Hilton Head Hospital, Beres said. The girls were taken only as precaution, Beres said.

A condition update on the driver and passenger was not available.

The passenger of the Mustang had to be cut from the vehicle and was taken by medical helicopter to Savannah Memorial University Medical Center.

No information was available about the passenger.
