A 25-year-old Hilton Head Island man was killed early Sunday after his car hit a tree, officials said Monday.

David Moreno-Romero of Marshland Road died after his Ford Explorer hit a tree along Leg O'Mutton Road at about 2:30 a.m., Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said.

Moreno-Romero was pronounced dead after being cut out of the car by Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue Division paramedics, Allen said.

A 25-year-old passenger was ejected from the sports-utility vehicle during the crash and was taken to Hilton Head Hospital for treatment, said Joheida Fister, fire department spokeswoman. His name and information on his condition were not released Monday afternoon.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the single-vehicle wreck. More information is expected to be released today, Highway Patrol officials said.

A toxicology report is expected in the coming weeks, Allen said.
