A photo by 17-year-old Jessica Berry, a junior at Battery Creek High School, will decorate the cover of this summer's EMBARQ Yellow Pages.

The photo was selected by Dex Media, publisher of the directory, from about 50 submissions as the winner of the "Beautiful Beaufort" contest.

Through the contest, students photograph picturesque scenes in Beaufort County and learn to appreciate the beauty of their community, said John Cullinen, a photography and visual arts teacher at Battery Creek.

"I found this scene hidden away from the view of the local tourists," Jessica said of her photo, which shows a marsh near Woods Memorial Bridge in Beaufort. "I preferred the bright greens of this marsh to the duller browns of other marshes in the area. This photo, I decided, would be a perfect representation of Beaufort because it consisted of two common features in our area: a Palmetto tree and a marsh scene."

Jessica will continue studying photography at Battery Creek next year.
