Bryant Shawn Young was charged with aggravated assault, pointing and presenting a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was at the Beaufort County Detention Center on $75,000 bond Friday afternoon.
A 20-year-old man said he was driving down Broad River Boulevard on Thursday afternoon when he noticed a white SUV following closely behind him, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.
The man told investigators he drove to a friend's house at the mobile home park and upon getting out of his car, noticed the driver of the SUV, believed by police to be Young, get out of his car, carrying a handgun.
When the man's friend did not answer the door, the man told deputies he ran into the woods to get away from Young, at which point Young allegedly told the man that he'd "kill him the next time he saw him," then left.
A deputy responding to the area spotted a white Toyota SUV matching the description of Young's vehicle and stopped the vehicle. Young was arrested, and police say they found a .40-caliber handgun in the SUV.
Carjacking, assault suspect extradited to Beaufort
A suspect wanted in connection with a 2008 Burton car-jacking has been arrested, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.
Jonathan Mitchell, 35, was extradited to Beaufort County on Friday morning after being identified as the suspect in a car-jacking this past December on Goethe Hill Rd. Mitchell had been previously arrested on unrelated charges in Savannah and at the time of his arrest was found to be driving the car-jacking victim's car.
Mitchell also will face charges of assault and battery with intent to kill in connection with the Dec. 15 attack.
Authorities say just before 8 p.m. that night, Mitchell approached a 30-year old man as he left a convenience store on Robert Smalls Parkway and asked for a ride. The alleged victim agreed, and the two men left the store in the former's 2004 gold-colored Honda Civic.
Mitchell asked the driver to turn down Goethe Hill Road off Parris Island Gateway, then asked the driver for money. When the driver said he had none, Mitchell pulled out a hammer and began striking the victim about the head, according to the release.
The driver pulled over in the area between Munch Road and Singleton Hill Circle, and Mitchell demanded he exit the vehicle. Mitchell then drove off in the car, leaving the victim on the roadside with severe facial and head injuries, the release said.
Mitchell will remain in custody in the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
