A 6-year-old Florida girl died Monday morning in Jasper County after the car in which she was riding slid off the road and overturned in a water-filled ditch, S.C. Highway Patrol officials said.

The wreck happened about 3:45 a.m. on Interstate 95 near mile marker 15 when the 2008 PT Cruiser driven by the girl's mother slid off of the right side of the road, troopers said.

After leaving the road, the car rolled onto its roof and landed in water 4 or 5 feet deep, troopers said. The girl was in the back seat behind the driver and was unable to get out of the vehicle after the crash, troopers said.

Jasper County Coroner Martin Saul III said the girl drowned.

The girl's 32-year-old mother, a 9-year-old boy and a 34-year-old man -- all from Holiday, Fla. -- were in the car when it crashed. No other injuries were reported, and everyone was wearing seat belts, troopers said.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation, but troopers said alcohol was not a factor. No charges have been filed, troopers said.

Investigators are unsure if it was raining at the time of the wreck.
