An unidentified man was killed Saturday after the sport utility vehicle in which he was a passenger went off the road, rolled over and crushed him on Hilton Head Island just before 1:35 p.m. Saturday, officials said. A second passenger was flown to a Savannah hospital for treatment.

The driver of the vehicle, Federico Sanchez, whose age was unknown Saturday, has been taken into custody, Cpl. Paul Brouthers of S.C. Highway Patrol said.

It was unclear what he was charged with.

The SUV veered off a sharp curve on Marshland Road near the Cross Island Parkway toll booths, Brouthers said.

Marshland Road was closed for about 90 minutes, Hilton Head Fire & Rescue Division spokeswoman Joheida Fister said.

The victim, a back seat passenger, was ejected from the SUV, Brouthers said.

He was dead when paramedics arrived, Fister said.

Sanchez was treated at Hilton Head Hospital before being taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, Brouthers said.

The second passenger was flown by LifeStar, a medical helicopter service, to Savannah's Memorial University Medical Center, he said.

The Highway Patrol's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team was re-constructing the wreck Saturday evening, Brouthers said. It remains under investigation.
