Woman threatens suicide on message board to see 'if anyone still cared'

March 25, 2009

A 60-year-old Bluffton woman frightened readers of Bluffton Today's blog earlier this month and sent them searching for help after she threatened to kill herself and then signed off the message board, a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report released Monday said.

The woman posted this March 9: " ... Nobody cares. Suicide therapy does not help when you face the wrath of the world ... Do you care that hurting a person might actually cause them to want to die? Maybe I should crawl into a hole and die. I bid you a fond adieu."

Several readers offered help and support through message posts, but the woman had logged off and couldn't be reached, the report said.

A Bluffton Today employee called authorities.

Police found the woman through her e-mail address and Internet service provider, the report said.

The woman told deputies she wrote the post but had merely wanted to see "if anyone still cared out there."

No action was taken by deputies, but a message post on the Web site said the woman had been banned from any further posts.
