Marquetta Goodwine, spokeswoman of the Gullah-Geechee people, was honored by the HOTEP organization as one of the first recipients of the Eddie Dean Gaffney Award for being a trailblazer in "breaking the chains of psychological slavery in the African diaspora." The award was presented Jan. 30 at Woodruff Library in Atlanta as a part of HOTEP's annual breakthrough conference. HOTEP's mission is to bring together pastors, educators, mental health professionals and parents for community change through public dialogue and scholarship.
