Almost a week later, the couple, who had been baby-sitting their grandson at the time, aren't sleeping so well.
"Every night at 3 o'clock I'm up," said Tony Solomon, who had been upstairs with his wife and grandson when the truck slammed into their home.
"We heard a large bang and tires screeching," he said. "I jumped out of bed -- I actually landed on my knees -- and I ran downstairs.
"But before I got halfway down the stairs, (the driver) had pulled out and gone," said Tony Solomon, who cut his feet on the wreckage littering the front of the house.
Part of their dining room table was in the kitchen, he said.
Car parts were strewn in the rubble and collectibles the family accumulated during Tony Solomon's Marine Corps tours abroad were destroyed.
According to a Bluffton Police report, the driver, a Bluffton man, had left his girlfriend's house after a fight and was driving so fast he lost control of his truck.
"He had gotten in an argument with his girlfriend, who lives right in that area," said Bluffton Police Department spokesman Lt. Bryan Norberg. "He got in his pickup, was upset, accelerated at a fast rate of speed to get out of there, and lost control of his vehicle."
The man drove off after ramming into the dining room, but Norberg said he pulled over, walked back to the scene of the crash and flagged down officers.
Norberg said "there was no indication he was impaired" by alcohol.
The driver was charged with driving too fast for conditions and not having proof of insurance, both misdemeanors. The Island Packet does not name those charged with misdemeanors.
For their part, the Solomons are upset about the damage -- estimated at $25,000 in the police report -- and the hassle of getting their home back to normal.
"We're doing battle with his insurance company to get the house fixed," said Tony Solomon.
He said the house is insured, but the deductible is steep. The couple is seeking legal advice.
