Propane truck driver charged in bus crash

The driver of a propane truck that rear-ended a Palmetto Breeze bus Monday afternoon was ticketed for the wreck, according to a Beaufort County sheriff's report.

Kevin Dixon, 34, of Bluffton, was charged with driving too fast for conditions. The Palmetto Breeze bus had stopped to unload passengers and Dixon, who was driving at least 45 mph, was unable to brake in time, the report said.

The wreck on William Hilton Parkway near Hilton Head Resort sent nine people -- including Dixon -- to Hilton Head Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries.

The Suburban Propane truck caught fire, but its large tank remained intact and did not leak gas, the report said. Firefighters were able to quickly put the blaze out, but the $45,500 vehicle was totaled.

Damage to the bus was estimated at $10,000.
