In all, the cooperative awarded $30,121 Thursday and Friday to winning teachers and their team members in the fifth annual Bright Ideas grant program. The money comes from utility customers who agree to round up their monthly bills to the nearest dollar. Those extra cents go into the grant fund.
This year, 40 grants will benefit more than 6,800 students in southern Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties, according to a cooperative news release.
Representatives from the cooperative and the trust greeted teachers with balloons, gift bags and their checks at each school. Next month, the cooperative will host a luncheon at Palmetto Electric's New River facility off U.S. 278 to honor the teachers and their administrators.
The cooperative invited teachers earlier this year to submit proposals for innovative classroom projects. Last month, 110 grant applications, totaling more than $97,700, were received from teachers in the three counties.
