Turns out Lynyrd Skynyrd doesn't need Hilton Head Island around, anyhow.

The Southern rock outfit's concert Sunday night at Honey Horn Plantation has been canceled, said Gregg Russell, president of the

island-based group High Tide Entertainment, which was putting on the show. But, he added, the band has guaranteed the island a makeup visit sometime in the spring.

Russell cited the recent rash of tropical storms as part of the reason for the postponement. "We have had an ongoing dialogue with the Nashville office of the William Morris Agency over the past few weeks as Hurricane Gustav, Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike have approached the southeast coastlines,"he said in a press release.

Skynyrd was slated to headline High Tide's inaugural Hilton Head Music Festival. Country singer Blake Shelton was also originally slated to appear, but backed out shortly after being announced in August, citing scheduling conflicts.

"The silver lining in all of this is that we can look forward to hosting a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert at Honey Horn in the spring," said High Tide CEO Tom Swanson.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, 2006 inductees into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, would have been one of the highest-profile bands to perform on the island. High Tide last year brought South Carolina natives Hootie & the Blowfish, and the island has in the past few years hosted shows by boomer favorites Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The postponement comes at an unusually lively time for the local music scene. The north end's new Shoreline Ballroom will host long-running folk-rock duo the Indigo Girls on Friday and has booked an upcoming show by highly acclaimed indie-folk singer Conor Oberst. Meanwhile, Stages Music and More in Park Plaza is bringing in a double-bill of the Florida-based punk outfit Against Me! and New Jersey punk notable Ted Leo on Oct. 2. It also announced a double bill of Sevendust and Taproot on Oct. 19.
