RIDGELAND -- A 20-year-old Ridgeland man died instantly Sunday morning when the car he was riding in ran off Interstate 95 and skidded into a tree.

Terry Eddings was ejected from the back seat of the Oldsmobile Cutlass and thrown through the rear windshield at about 2:20 a.m. at mile marker 16, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol and Jasper County coroner Martin Sauls III.

He was not wearing a seat belt, the Highway Patrol said.

Andre Eddings, 19, also was ejected from the car, but was not injured. Another passenger -- Lance White, 30, of Ridgeland -- was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver, 19-year-old Scotty E. Miles of Ridgeland, told the Highway Patrol he was driving in the left northbound lane when an 18-wheeler changed from the right to the left lane, forcing the car into the median.
