An early-morning wreck Monday tied up traffic on eastbound U.S. 278 and sent a bicyclist to the hospital with serious injuries.

The accident occurred at 6:40 a.m. when a man on a bike crossed William Hilton Parkway in front of an sport utility vehicle driven by a 72-year-old Georgia woman near the Spanish Wells Road intersection, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The man, who hadn't yet been identified Monday by law enforcement, was flown by helicopter to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. He remained hospitalized Monday afternoon.

The woman -- Norma A. Canady of Richmond Hill, Ga. -- was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

No charges have been filed in connection with the wreck. Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said the incident still is under investigation.

The wreck is the second major one this year on Hilton Head involving a bicyclist being hit by a vehicle.

Arthur Lee Stewart Jr., 50, of Hilton Head died May 6 as a result of injuries sustained in a wreck on the north end of the island. According to the Highway Patrol, he was hit by a drunken driver on Gumtree Road.
