Lt. Glenn Zanelotti said he could not confirm whether investigators had reached the student's parents so they could not release the name of the injured student. He had no other information Saturday about the incident at the Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa.
The student was leaning over the balcony talking to someone on another balcony around 3 p.m. Friday when he slipped and fell, authorities said. He fell about six stories, but hit another balcony on the way down, which broke his fall. He landed on the roof of the hotel's meeting and convention center, where Town of Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue crews recovered him. Authorities Friday said they were investigating whether alcohol was involved in the incident.
The student was taken to Hilton Head Hospital where he received a CAT scan. He was then flown by helicopter to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah to be examined for internal injuries. The student was conscious and appeared to be in good condition, authorities said.
The Sheriff's Office originally said Friday the student attended Ohio State University, but a classmate e-mailed The Island Packet on Saturday to say he was a student at Ohio University. Zanelotti could not confirm this information.
