A drunken pedestrian -- described as a church pastor -- caused a wreck early Monday morning by walking in the middle of William Hilton Parkway.

He then climbed into the overturned Jeep, refusing to get out until officers arrived, according to witnesses.

A 17-year-old Hilton Head Island woman heading eastbound on the parkway just before 2 a.m. swerved to narrowly miss the 46-year-old Georgia man in the road.

Her SUV spun and flipped several times, ending up upside down in the roadway in front of The Bargain Box.

The woman climbed out to call for help and was soon replaced by the Evans, Ga. man, who got inside the flipped-over vehicle, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's report.

The man smelled of alcohol and was arrested on a pedestrian under the influence of alcohol on a highway charge, the report stated.

The man was released from jail without bond seven hours later.

He listed his occupation as a church pastor, told deputies he had been drinking all day and said he couldn't provide a reason for his actions, the report said.

No injuries were reported.
