Witchcraft made me steal beer, man tells deputy
A 26-year-old Hilton Head Island man was charged with shoplifting after stealing a can of beer from a gas station and then drinking it right outside the door, authorities said.
When confronted outside of Kangaroo Express, 71 Mathews Drive, at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, the man appeared confused. He then charged at a Beaufort County sheriff's deputy, causing the officer to draw his pistol, according to a report.
The suspect was fidgety during questioning and admitted to snorting cocaine earlier in the evening, the report stated. He also had a white residue on the base of his nose, according to the officer.
He was charged with shoplifting and taken by ambulance to Hilton Head Regional Medical Center, where he told an officer that he had stolen the beer because "people were doing witchcraft on him," the report stated.
The rest of his comments were "incoherent and incomplete," the deputy noted.
