Remote wonder: Kayaking the Canoochee River
If you tell someone that you are going to paddle a river with the name "Canoochee," they will likely reply "Gesundheit!" This gem of a river has an odd name but promises some of the most enjoyable paddling on the coast.
Life among the giants at Congaree Swamp National Park
The ranger smiled at us from his perch on the rail of the boardwalk. "The water is up in the swamp today after the rains. That's OK if you want to hike, though; we just got a new boat and will be happy to try it out by coming to rescue you."
Take a walk through the woods at Webb Wildlife Management Area
On a crisp, clear fall day, the sounds of the forest come at you in full force. The breeze rustles dry leaves and whispers through tall pines. The conversation of birds can be heard among thickets of myrtles. In the unencumbered air, it seems as if you can even hear the very sunlight reaching through to the forest floor in one last embrace of summer's memory before the chilly Lowcountry winter begins.
Ashepoo River: Paddling through history
Moss-laden branches hang like a curtain over the stream. A snake darts from the bank and disappears between the trees. Warm sunlight beckons as the canopy widens and soon you are paddling in the midst of open grassy marshland stretching as far as the eye can see. Birds rise noisily from the edge of the stream and the water churns with the tail of a large reptile, making his presence known to those who have entered his territory uninvited.
On Edisto Island: Beach bums for a day
If you are looking for a place where time not only stops, but the hands on your watch seem to move backward, then you need not travel very far from home.
Lots to explore on Cumberland Island
Cumberland Island is a place of extremes. Ornate Victorian mansions contrast rustic camping in the woods. Wild horses roam sandy roads where cars are rarely seen. Miles of wide, sunny Atlantic beaches are covered with shells instead of footprints. Lizards scurry in the leaves, songbirds decorate tree branches like holiday ornaments and gnarled, centenary, live oaks slowly compete to block the sky. Cumberland Island is a place of extreme beauty and an island that surges with life.
There is nothing quite like a day on the lake. Those of us who live near the sea can sometimes forget the particular brand of recreation that can be found on placid inland waters. True, one can do pretty much the same things on the lake as can be done on the May River but there is something about being away from the pull of the tide and sting of salt that creates an entirely different experience.
