High School Basketball: Girls squads gearing up for postseason play

The area's girls basketball teams enjoy a clean slate as they open the S.C. High School League playoffs tonight.

Hilton Head Island High School -- the No. 1 seed in Region 7-AAA -- will face Socastee at 6 tonight to start the Class 3-A playoffs.

The Seahawks (19-5, 9-1) are coming off a disappointing loss to archrival Bluffton High School on Friday night. Hilton Head High led by 12 points early in the fourth period before the Bobcats rallied to claim a two-point victory.

With the victory, Thomas Heyward (22-0) clinched Region 1-AA.

Kayla Canavan led the Rebels with 10 points. Brielle Jungblut had nine points and seven steals, and Ashley Layman scored six and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Ridgeland basketball teams roll past Hardeeville

The loudest cheers for the Ridgeland High School girls basketball team came after the Jaguars had left the court.

They didn't come during Ridgeland's 53-24 win over Hardeeville, bur rather prior to the boys game, when the entire team came out to sing the Star Spangled Banner.

Maybe that's because the Jaguars have few surprises left to show on the hardwood. Ridgeland's 29-point blowout of the Hurricanes gave the Jaguars an immaculate 14-0 record in Region 5-A heading into the Class 1-A playoffs.

Ridgeland's Scott highlights National Signing Day for area players

Wesley Scott, not satisfied with his maroon shirt and black tie, pulled off his grey sweater and tugged on a hooded sweatshirt bearing the Miami (Ohio) University logo.

The Ridgeland defensive end never wavered from his verbal commitment to the RedHawks, making it official Wednesday at the Jasper County School District boardroom. Scott said he entertained no thoughts of other schools since committing last year.

Scott said RedHawks coaches want him at 280 pounds, up from the 235 he weighs now. A new diet and life in the weight room are on the horizon.

2011 Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette All-Area Football Team

Three weeks after playing for the Class 3-A state football championship, Bluffton High School players and coaches sill haven't had much time to reflect on their team's record-breaking season.

Many players transitioned to basketball. Head coach Ken Cribb prepared for and coached on the Shrine Bowl staff. And linebacker Michael Grant started in the all-star game.

But given a moment, in the quiet confines of a school deserted for the holiday break, three of the Bobcats' key components reflected on a 14-1 season, which ended with a loss to South Pointe in Clemson's Memorial Stadium.

"I'm not sure what I'm expecting," Dantzler said. "I know I'll be shocked."

Ridgeland boys and girls hold off Hilton Head High

Tyron Mikell had not scored Friday as his team's season opener moved into the final minutes.

But the Ridgeland senior wasn't fazed. He was still trying to gain his legs from football season, he said. And he said his teammates had done a capable job early.

But with time short in the Jaguars' home game with Hilton Head High, Mikell wanted the ball. His two driving baskets during the final two minutes helped Ridgeland hold on and defeat the Seahawks, 37-32.

Ridgeland girls counting on 'D' to lead title defense

Frederick Toomer barely finished enjoying his team's success last season before people began asking for more.

The Ridgeland girls basketball coach knows expectations are high after the Jaguars delivered the school a Class 1-A state championship in 2010. The state's coaches must think something is there. They've voted the Jaguars the top team in Class 1-A to start the season.

A return trip to Columbia would mean Ridgeland overcame losing its top two scorers and rebounders, including 2010 Class 1-A player of the year Brittany Richardson, who averaged a double-double and could run the floor as well as play in the post.

Bamberg-Ehrhardt edges Ridgeland again, 19-14

BAMBERG --Being down most of the game, Bamberg-Ehrhardt needed to make something happen if it hoped to extend its season at least one more game.

With under two minutes left to play, Sumner Cooler's 33-yard touchdown pass to Landon Sandifer would be just enough to help the Red Raiders pick up a 19-14 win over Ridgeland and advance to the Class 1-A Division I Lower State final.

"That's what we preach each and every day," B-E head coach Butch Crosby said. "We preach each and every day about hanging in there, and that's what we work hard for. That's what we live for. That's why we come out here in the summer and work as hard as we do. We push our kids to that limit because late in the season is when it pays off."
