    After moving to Beaufort from Charleston about eight years ago, Elizabeth Heinrich started looking for a mentoring program for two of her sons -- something that would keep them busy, give them exercise and teach them discipline. She came across the Young Marines program online.

  • LowCountry Legal Aid to prepare wills for free
    LowCountry Legal Aid, a nonprofit organization offering legal help to local residents, will begin a Wills for Heroes program today to honor local heroes near the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The legal service will prepare simple wills for members of the Bluffton Township Fire District and hopes to include others who serve the community in upcoming years.   • Library to host 'Mockingbird' party
    The Beaufort library is hosting a "To Kill a Mockingbird" 50th anniversary party from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the library, 311 Scott St. Harper Lee's novel was first published July 11, 1960. The free party includes readings of selected scenes, a book discussion and a sampling of Alabama Lane Cake, as mentioned in the novel. Lee biographer Charles Shields will moderate a book discussion during the party via telephone.
  • Genealogy speaker to discuss Confederacy
    The Old Saint Bartholomew Chapter of the S.C. Genealogy Society of Colleton County will host guest speaker Billy Syfrett at 3 p.m. Sunday at the society's research center, 609 Black St., Walterboro. Syfrett will discuss the events that culminated in the dedication of Colleton County's Confederate monument. Syfrett is a Confederate re-enactor, Adjutant of the Colleton Rangers, Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp No. 1643, and a genealogist. The program is free and open to the public.
  • USS Missouri members to reunite in Illinois
    The USS Missouri (BB-63) Association will hold its 37th annual reunion from Wednesday-Sept. 20 at the Hilton-Lisle/Naperville in Lisle, Ill. All veterans and interested parties, family and friends are invited.
  • Lodging sought for vets during Shrimp Fest
    Appropriate lodging is being sought in Beaufort, Port Royal, on Dataw and Fripp islands for families of wounded troops who will attend the Lt. Dan Weekend from Sept. 29-Oct. 3 during the Beaufort Shrimp Festival.
  • Honor Flight helps send WWII vets to DC
    Honor Flight Savannah is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sending local World War II veterans -- including those in Beaufort County -- to Washington, D.C., to visit the National World War II Memorial.     This week I'll write about a food that's been in the news lately. It can be found in different colors and sizes -- all the way up to jumbo. It can be eaten as a main dish or a side item. It mixes well and it is popular on special occasions. If you haven't guessed, it's the egg.
  • Coupon Queen: Don't blame economic woes on couponers
    Question. Jill, don't you ever think about what you are doing on a larger scale? In encouraging people to not pay high prices, wait until products go on sale and use coupons to get them at extremely low prices, people are going to get used to paying less for everything. If everyone did this, people are never going to want to pay full price for anything again. I just can't help but think you could be responsible for an economic collapse.
  • Girl Scouts to host chocolate fundraiser
    Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina's annual "Death By Chocolate: A Chocolate and Champagne Affair" fundraiser will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Crowne Plaza Resort on Hilton Head Island. The evening will feature chefs and vendors from the Beaufort County area, each creating a chocolate entree, drink or dessert. Tastings will be available for partygoers throughout the night, and each entry will be judged by a panel of judges. A silent auction will also take place, and a cash bar will be available.   • Civil War diary brought to life at round table
    The first meeting of the Lowcountry Civil War Round Table's 2010-11 program year will be held at 6:45 p.m. today at the Bluffton High School auditorium, 12 H.E. McCraken Circle. Charleston actress Chris Weatherhead returns to reprise her one-woman show based on the Civil War diary of Mary Chesnut. The subject  will be "Mary Chesnut on the Eve of the Civil War." Cost is $10 for guests. 
  • Do you have the best slowcooker dip?
    The Bluffton library will host a Crock Pot Party & Dip Competition from 3 to 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at the library, 120 Palmetto Way. Participants may bring a slowcooker filled with a favorite warm dip. The library will supply chips, tables and electric outlets. The public will enjoy free samples and vote on their favorite dip. The winner will receive a gift card to a local restaurant. Football clips will be played on the big screen. Registration is required for competitors.
  • Women's lunches begin in October
    Bluffton Lowcountry Women's Connection will be hosting luncheons at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 20, Dec. 15, Feb. 16 and April 20 at the Hampton Hall clubhouse. The luncheons are open to all women. Each luncheon will have an inspirational speaker and entertainment. Cost is $24 a lunch. Free child care will be offered. Information and complete program details for each luncheon will be published a month prior to the event.
  • Estuarium accepting new members
    The Lowcountry Estuarium is accepting applications for new members to its board. Prospective members should have an interest in the preservation of the saltwater estuary system and be willing to learn about environmental preservation.
