Prep Roundup, Feb. 11

Andrea Daring turned in a three-point play to push the lead to six and give Thomas Heyward Academy some breathing room with about a minute left to play, and the Rebels went on to claim a 41-33 win over Charleston Collegiate in girls basketball on Friday.

With the victory, Thomas Heyward (22-0) clinched Region 1-AA.

Kayla Canavan led the Rebels with 10 points. Brielle Jungblut had nine points and seven steals, and Ashley Layman scored six and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Prep Roundup, Feb. 8: Key wins for Hilton Head High; Mazzanna wins 300th

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hilton Head High 40, Berkeley 18: Sabrina Drammis outscored Berkeley by herself, scoring 19 points as the Seahawks wrapped up at least a share of the Region 7-AAA championship. It is Hilton Head High's third region title in the last four seasons.

"I'm pretty happy about that," said Seahawks coach Dave Greenberg, whose squad wraps up the regular season Friday against rival Bluffton. "The worst that happens, even if we lose Friday, we end up tied."

Prep Roundup, Feb. 4: HHCA's Conroy wins 200th game

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hilton Head Christian 40, Bible Baptist 37: The Eagles fought off a challenge from their Savannah visitors, getting their record to .500 and giving Kenny Conroy his 200th career victory as a girls basketball coach -- against his former team, no less.

Hilton Head Christian led 28-16 at the half, but struggled to put away Bible Baptist in the non-region matchup.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Thomas Heyward Academy 47, Bible Baptist 28: Brielle Jungblut and Jamie Malphrus scored 14 points each, and Caitlyn Cooler had seven assists as the Rebels remained undefeated.

Thomas Heyward (19-0 overall, 8-0 SCISAA Region 1-AA) has four more region games remaining, including tonight's home game against Charleston Collegiate.

Prep Roundup, Feb. 1: Bluffton boys rally for win at Cane Bay

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bluffton 72, Cane Bay 62: Trailing by 18 in the first half and 15 during the third quarter, the Bluffton High School boys basketball team mounted a furious comeback at Cane Bay to remain on top of Region 7-AAA with a 72-62 win Tuesday night.

"It just wasn't going our way," Bluffton coach Brett Macy said. "We were flat."

Thomas Heyward girls roll past Beaufort Academy

Caitlyn Cooler had been anticipating Friday night's game against Beaufort Academy for quite some time.

The senior guard for Thomas Heyward Academy had spent most of her life down the road at Beaufort Academy -- beginning all the way back in pre-kindergarten -- before transferring to play for the Rebels after her ninth grade year.

"This is the game I've been waiting for all year, all season," Cooler said.

Beaufort High 43, Fort Dorchester 42:

Joey Chaplin hit the go-ahead basket with under a minute to play, and the defense stayed strong to help the Beaufort High School boys basketball team pick up a road win Tuesday night at Fort Dorchester, 43-42.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hilton Head High 45, Berkeley 28: The Seahawks used a strong first half to remain undefeated in Region 7-AAA.

Sabrina Drammis scored 17 points and added eight rebounds to lead Hilton Head High. Americal Jenkins scored 10 points and Lauryn Bush contributed six.

Hilton Head Prep 31, Memorial Day 29: The Dolphins won their third game of the season, holding off the visitors despite playing more than three minutes in the final quarter with only four players.

Taylor Kent had nine points and eight rebounds for Hilton Head Prep, which dressed seven players to start the game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Thomas Heyward 83, Cathedral Academy 20: The undefeated Rebels shared the wealth in an easy region win, as six players scored in double figures, led by Brielle Jungblut's 12 points and nine steals.

Jamie Malphrus added 11 points, Caitlyn Cooler had 10 points and six assists, and Ashlie Layman had 10 points for Thomas Heyward (13-0 overall, 2-0 region), which shot 62 percent from the field.

Prep Roundup, Dec. 30

Hilton Head Christian Academy boys basketball team played the role of spolier Thursday.

The Eagles denied host Hilton Head High a chance at the Island Classic title, winning 37-31 to earn a berth themselves. Christian Academy will play Strom Thurmond at 5:30 p.m. today for the championship.

Hilton Head Christian sopomore Brad Meccariello scored 11 points to lead the Eagles. Alex MacDonald scored 13 points and Jacob Coltrane added 11 for Hilton Head High.

Three weeks after playing for the Class 3-A state football championship, Bluffton High School players and coaches sill haven't had much time to reflect on their team's record-breaking season.

Many players transitioned to basketball. Head coach Ken Cribb prepared for and coached on the Shrine Bowl staff. And linebacker Michael Grant started in the all-star game.

But given a moment, in the quiet confines of a school deserted for the holiday break, three of the Bobcats' key components reflected on a 14-1 season, which ended with a loss to South Pointe in Clemson's Memorial Stadium.

HHCA boys, Thomas Heyward girls win titles at Prep's annual RET tournament

Hilton Head Christian Academy's run to the SCISAA Class 2-A football title delayed its boys basketball team's start together.

And in recent weeks, between a full slate of games and the Thanksgiving holiday, the Eagles have had few chances to practice on consecutive days.

But a recent stretch of three straight practices allowed coach Kenny Conroy to install remaining offenses and defenses. And a more well-refined and multiple-look Eagles squad showed off their versatile sets en route to winning the boys championship Saturday at the RET Thomas Memorial Holiday Tournament. The Christian Academy defeated rival Hilton Head Prep 48-30 to earn the hardware and avenge a loss to the Dolphins in last year's final.

Hilton Head Prep, HHCA boys advance to RET tournament final

The Hilton Head Prep boys basketball team worked almost three quarters Friday to find separation.

The Dolphins needed less than two seconds to break free once they did.

Two big plays to end the third quarter helped propel Prep, and it defeated Thomas Heyward Academy 48-25 on the first day of the RET Thomas Memorial Holiday Tournament. The host Dolphins advance to play rival Hilton Head Christian Academy today at 5:30 p.m. in the championship game.

Annual RET basketball tournament tips off tonight on Hilton Head Island

The 12th annual RET Thomas Memorial Holiday tournament tips off today at Hilton Head Prep and Hilton Head Christian Academy.

Boys and girls teams from Prep, Hilton Head Christian, Thomas Heyward Academy and Bible Baptist will compete. First-round games will be played tonight, and girls and boys championship games played Saturday at Prep.

In addition to the hoops, the tournament will provide a number of contests and opportunities to donate. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the RET Thomas Pediatric Cancer Foundation, which aids pediatric cancer patients and their families.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Thomas Heyward Academy 49, Colleton Prep 43: Jamie Malphrus and Caitlyn Cooler had double-doubles to help the Rebels remain unbeaten. Malphrus finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, and Cooler had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Kayla Canavan contributed nine points -- seven of which came in the fourth quarter -- to help Thomas Heyward (6-0). Ashlie Layman added 11 rebounds and five steals.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hilton Head Christian 59, Thomas Heyward Academy 32: The Eagles won the Warhawk Invitational hosted by Colleton Prep.

The Christian Academy's Conner Millen led all scorers with 12. For the Eagles, Clay Oliver added 10 points, Taylor MacDonald 9, Brad Meccariello 8, Jamario Williams 8 and C.J. Evanofski 7.

Prep Roundup, Dec. 3: Carpenter's 3 lifts Beaufort High over Edisto

BOYS BASKETBALL

Beaufort High 48, Edisto 46: Keith Carpenter sank a 3-pointer -- his only three points of the game -- with little more than 10 seconds to play, and the Eagles knocked off an Edisto team featuring University of North Carolina-committed Brice Johnson in the Shoney's Invitational.

Jordan Broussard led Beaufort High with 11 points, Keion Marshall scored nine and Anthony White and Henry Jenkins chipped in eight points each.

Prep Notebook: Area SCISAA stars earn honors

SCISAA Class 2-A state champion Hilton Head Christian Academy will be the most well-represented of the area's independent schools during Saturday's North-South all-star games.

The Eagles are sending four players to the 11-man all-star game, which will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Orangeburg Prep. Long snapper Cory Cheadle, lineman Nick Borghi, linebacker Zach Reynolds and tight end Devan Fitzhugh will represent Christian Academy in Orangeburg.

Joining the Eagles will be Thomas Heyward offensive linemen Joe Laycock and Nick Ashcraft, and defensive lineman Josh Mason. Hilton Head Prep running back L.J. Orage and linebacker Mark Halseth were also selections.
