Bluffton wrestlers lead the way at region tournament
Entering this season, Austin Farmer didn't expect the Bluffton High School wrestling team to be where it is now.
"We didn't think we were going to be that good," Farmer said. "But our team's just pulled together and pulled out so many wins."
What started with a region title and a first-round playoff win over Dreher continued on Saturday, as the Bobcats claimed four champions in the Region 7-AAA individual tournament Saturday at Hilton Head Island High.

Joe Fields did not know of Quincy Carter when he arrived at Atlanta Sports Academy last fall.
Carter helped coach football and baseball at the prep school and Fields, a former Battery Creek baseball player, searched the name on the Internet to learn of the troubled former professional baseball and football player.
In time, Fields said, he and Carter grew close.

The Hilton Head Island High School wrestling team didn't have the season it was hoping for this year, but the Seahawks are looking toward Saturday's individual tournament with a renewed sense of optimism.
"That's what we've been looking for the latter part of the season," coach Keith Massey said. "We're making sure our individuals are getting better and better every day."
Hilton Head High will host the Region 7-AAA individual tournament Saturday, beginning at 11:30 a.m., with the goal of sending most of its wrestlers to Lower State.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Bluffton 74, Hilton Head Prep 38: The Bobcats weren't at their best but still claimed a 36-point win over Prep.

Jacob Coltrane works each day in practice on his long-range shots.
The Hilton Head Island High School sophomore feels it's his duty to knock down 3-pointers when his team needs them, and he was disappointed after not shooting well in recent games. But on Tuesday, the Seahawks' offense caught up to the high-level defense that boys basketball coach Ken Updike had been pushing all year.
Guards worked the ball inside out, moved the ball around the perimeter and enjoyed open looks against Battery Creek's zone. The result was a 62-45 Hilton Head High victory at the Palace.

Bluffton High School receiver Dimitri Lowry has multiple offers to play college football, but it appears one has emerged the favorite.
Lowry said he favors Johnson C. Smith University, a Division II school in Charlotte. The Bobcats senior said he has family in the Charlotte area and likes the school's proximity to the city's professional sports teams.
Golden Bulls coaches told Lowry he would fit well in their up-tempo style. The program competes in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

It wasn't pretty by any means, but Lonnie Roberts certainly will take it.
The Bluffton girls basketball coach spent most of Friday night's game against region rival Battery Creek in frustration. Roberts' team -- which entered averaging 52.6 points per game -- was held to just 11 first-half points and shot an abysmal 18 percent (3 for 17) from the free throw line through the first two periods.
But when it mattered most, the Bobcats came to play.
(full story)Loss to Cane Bay puts Battery Creek wrestlers in tough spot
Battery Creek entered Wednesday night's region match against Cane Bay knowing it likely needed a win to remain in the Class 3-A playoff hunt. And with two weight classes to go, the Dolphins were in position to do just that.
Trailing by 11, Battery Creek needed pins in each of its final two weight classes in order to earn a one-point victory. But midway through the second period of the 120-pound match, Battery Creek's Jimmy Sanchez dislocated his left elbow, giving the Cobras a win by injury default on their way to a 41-24 victory.
"All of them are ones we want to win, but tonight was one we felt like we had to have to keep the pressure off our backs and help get us to where we need to be without having to look to other people," assistant coach Jim Shuman said.

It came just four days after Hilton Head High suffered a disappointing one-point setback at Cane Bay to open up region play. The Seahawks were down by 17 points heading into the fourth quarter and had a shot to win it at the buzzer before coming up short.

(full story)Beaufort High overcomes Oliver, Battery Creek
A tough road environment and fired-up opponent weren't enough to keep the Beaufort High School boys basketball team down.
The Eagles regrouped Friday after trailing early, using their size and depth in the second half to overcome a valiant individual effort and defeat rival Battery Creek 78-66.
Dolphins forward Justice Oliver led all scorers with 34 points, but that wasn't enough to top the humming Eagles, who were led by Tyrone Holmes' 21 points.

Beaufort High boys sweep basketball series with rival Battery Creek
Battery Creek boys basketball coach Antoine Youmans said Friday his team can expect "the kitchen sink," thrown at them whenever it faces rival Beaufort High School.
The Eagles raced up and down the floor during the first meeting back in December, setting the pace for their victory. But Battery Creek scored often in transition during that game, and Beaufort High coach Bruce Beasley wanted a different tempo for Friday's rematch.
The tempo slowed, Beaufort High worked out of more halfcourt sets and as a result, churned out a lower key victory, winning 49-38 at home to sweep the Dolphins.
