Beaufort High's Neal signs on to run track for College of Charleston
Alexia Neal picked up track as a seventh grader after watching her older cousin compete for Beaufort High School.
Now a senior, Neal's curiosity has helped land her a chance to compete at the NCAA Division I level. She signed her intent Wednesday to join the women's track and field program at College of Charleston.
"I'm just stress free now," Neal said. "I'm looking forward to running on the college level."
(full story)Prep Roundup, May 16: AC Flora boys win state golf title; Hilton Head High 4th
AC Flora defeated Chapin in a playoff to capture the Class 3-A boys golf state championship Tuesday at Coastal Carolina University's Hackler Course, while Hilton Head Island High School finished 19 shots back in fourth place on a rainy day in Conway.
Hilton Head High was led by a player who doesn't even go to the school yet -- Andrew Orischak, a seventh-grader. Orischak earned all-state honors, shooting a 76 on Tuesday and finishing sixth overall with a 149 total. Hilton Head High's other scores from the final day were 83s from Gavin Lindstrom, Chris O'Donnell and Troy Hoisington.
"It was pretty good turnout for the boys," Seahawks coach Bill Smith said. "I was very happy with them and very proud of them."

Watson's record-setting day leads Whale Branch boys to state track title
COLUMBIA -- Andre Watson never truly realizes just how fast he runs until playing the videotape after the fact.
And even then it's sometimes hard to believe.
"I surprise myself every time," he said.

Beaufort High School golf coach Brook Dixon thinks his team has as good a shot as anybody in the Class 4-A Boys State Golf Championship that starts today at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville.
"I'm looking at the competition and it's stiff," Dixon said. "The course is really tough. But I like our chances. We're taking some kids up there that can really play."
The Eagles' top two players -- Taylor Simonsen and Josh Fickes -- have played the course before and should be able to give their teammates some insight. And Dixon says his team is just starting to come around.
(full story)Hilton Head High boys claim 4x800 gold medal for 6th straight year
In what has become a Hilton Head Island High School tradition, the Seahawks' boys 4x800-meter relay team won the Class 3-A state championship Friday night on Day 1 of the S.C. Track and Field State Championships at Spring Valley High School in Columbia.
This is the sixth straight year Hilton Head High has won gold in the event.
And, ironically, none of the four runners on this year's winning team -- Robbie Iulo, Jack Manesiotis, Colton Hennessey or Alex Couch -- competed in the event last season.
(full story)Whale Branch boys ready to make run at state track title this weekend
This could be the year for Whale Branch. It's not like it's been a long wait, though.
In only its second year of existence, Whale Branch has to be considered one of the favorites to take home the Class 1-A boys championship at this weekend's S.C. Track and Field State Championships at Spring Valley High School in Columbia.
The Warriors finished sixth last year in their first state meet. The return of the core of that team, coupled with the addition of senior sprinter Andre Watson, has the Warriors' coaches thinking title.

(full story)Beaufort High School girls soccer season ends with 1-0 playoff loss
As the Beaufort High School girls soccer team celebrated a rare playoff victory Monday, Eagles coach Terry Rawlins delivered a short scouting report on his team's next opponent, James Island.
"They have a striker who is out of this world," he said.
The characterization of James Island senior Taylor Sanders might have been hyperbolic, but the Eagles knew who to mark Wednesday. They had seen Sanders in past seasons.

Miranda Weslake scored twice and Mary Alice Strohmeyer added a goal as the Beaufort Academy girls soccer team defeated The King's Academy 3-0 on Tuesday night to advance to the SCISAA 1-A/2-A state championship.

The celebration paused briefly Monday while officials tried to determine what they had seen.
Claire Martin scored off a run up the right side, her shot sneaking inside the left post and through a hole in the net, rolling toward the Beaufort Middle School track.
The Beaufort High School junior delivered the game-winning goal in stoppage time to help the Eagles defeat White Knoll 2-1 and advance in the Class 4-A girls soccer playoffs.

(full story)Girls teams set for high school soccer playoffs
Ernie Suozzi has been repeating himself all season. He said it before the year began, he echoed it again during region play and preached it once more entering the playoffs.
"The only team that I feel could beat us in-state is ourselves," he said.
Suozzi -- the head coach of the Hilton Head Island High girls soccer team -- knows a thing or two about winning teams. After all, the Seahawks' head man has directed two of his last four clubs to state championships, including last year, when Hilton Head High knocked off Fort Mill, 4-2, in Columbia.

Beaufort High boys cruise past Conway into third round of tennis playoffs
Malcolm Kates doesn't want to jinx anything.
The task is difficult enough. The Beaufort High School tennis team has been stopped in the third round of the Class 4-A playoffs each year since 2006.
But this season brings a new opponent. And Kates, the Eagles' No. 1 singles player, said the team is playing well -- even if he didn't want to say it too loud.

Beaufort Academy 5, Cathedral Academy 0: Conner Akers scored twice as the Eagles captured the SCISAA Region 1-AA title over Cathedral Academy.
Beaufort Academy (5-7-1 overall, 3-1 region) and Cathedral finished with the same region record after splitting their two regular-season meetings, but the Eagles earned the region title by virtue of goal differential.

A bevy of Hilton Head Christian Academy athletes are headed to Porter-Gaud in Charleston on Saturday for the SCISAA state track and field meet, which the Eagles' inaugural program will be competing in for the first time.
Destiny Cook-Herndon and Mary Hannah Lewis will compete in the 3200-meter run, while Cook-Herndon and Lewis will join Carley Wilson and Kate Bennett in the 4x800 relay. Lewis' third and final event will be the 1600 run.
On the boys side, Jamario Williams will take part in four events -- the 4x100 relay and the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. He'll be joined in the 4x100 by Tyler Chisholm, DeAngelo Clark and Alex Martin, who will also compete in the 400 hurdles.

Beaufort High 6, North Augusta 0: The Beaufort High School boys tennis team overwhelmed its first-round opponent, North Augusta, on Tuesday in the Class 4-A playoffs, winning 6-0.
The Eagles, ranked sixth in the state, only dropped nine games total in the five singles matches. The only matchup of the day that was close was the No. 2 doubles match, but Beaufort's Fred Tkach and Daniel Lange prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker to complete the shutout.

BASEBALL
Whale Branch 9, Green Sea-Floyds 7: Timmy Campbell powered the Warriors on offense -- going 3 for 3 with a three-run homer, five RBIs and two runs scored -- and fellow junior Dee Delaney was a workhorse on the mound as Whale Branch advanced to the championship matchup of the Class 1-A district playoffs.
Delaney -- who also tripled and scored three runs -- struck out seven and allowed four earned runs in going all seven innings. The Warriors led 9-3 with two outs in the ninth before the visitors rallied, but Delaney was able to hold on.

BOYS TENNIS
SCISAA Class 3-A state championship: The Hilton Head Christian Academy boys tennis team ran up against perennial powerhouse Porter-Gaud on Friday in the SCISAA Class 3-A state championship match at Hammond School in Columbia, and it was the Cyclones who captured the crown -- but not without a serious battle.
Porter-Gaud needed to rally from first-set deficits in the last two doubles matches to pull out a 5-4 victory over the Eagles and win the state title after falling in the finals the previous two seasons.
(full story)Whale Branch, other area teams continue district playoffs today
The Whale Branch baseball team has been here once before.
For the second straight season, the Warriors kicked off the postseason with a victory to move ahead into the winner's bracket. But things went sour at this point last year, as Dean Hawkins' crew bowed out with consecutive losses.
But this is a different year and a different team. This is about progression.
(full story)Beaufort clinches share of region title
It turns out that 13 just may be Claire Martin's lucky number.
The Beaufort High School junior forgot her normal No. 17 jersey at home and was forced to borrow a JV jersey, No. 13, for the Eagles' home game Thursday night with Summerville.
There was certainly no bad luck involved as Martin scored the go-ahead goal and assisted on another as Beaufort (9-9, 6-0) beat Summerville, 3-0, to clinch at least a share of the region 8-AAAA crown.
