Beaufort girls finally earn region win
The laughter makes it better.
Minutes after a physical game with Fort Dorchester, Beaufort High School girls basketball players could only laugh as they left the court. A tough season brightened when the Eagles defeated the Patriots, 45-34, for their first region victory -- and in their final home game of the season.
"It's been rough down the stretch," said senior guard Emani Gray, who scored a game-high 18 points. "We were like, 'This is our last home game. We've got to win this.' Everybody put in the effort and we came out with a win."

WRESTLING
White Knoll 49, Beaufort High 18: The Eagles' team season came to a quick halt Saturday, as White Knoll defeated them in the opening round of the Class 4-A playoffs.
The match was closer than the final score might indicate, with Beaufort High (28-9) holding an 18-16 lead at one point. According to coach Bill DaMude, only one of the first nine matches of the day was decided by pin. But with three forfeits soon to follow, the Eagles' chances faded fast.

Beaufort High claims 5 region wrestling champions
Thyrik Legree knew he was the better wrestler and did not want to drag things out.
Beaufort High School's 182-pounder met Fort Dorchester's Michael Schuster in the final of the Region 8-AAAA individual tournament Wednesday night at Beaufort High. Legree had won two previous meetings with Schuster in close matches that went three periods.
"I did not want to go three periods -- at all," Legree said. "I was trying to go up there and be as aggressive as possible, but staying under control. Nothing crazy."

Wesley Scott, not satisfied with his maroon shirt and black tie, pulled off his grey sweater and tugged on a hooded sweatshirt bearing the Miami (Ohio) University logo.
The Ridgeland defensive end never wavered from his verbal commitment to the RedHawks, making it official Wednesday at the Jasper County School District boardroom. Scott said he entertained no thoughts of other schools since committing last year.
Scott said RedHawks coaches want him at 280 pounds, up from the 235 he weighs now. A new diet and life in the weight room are on the horizon.

(full story)Beaufort High to host 4-team duals Saturday
Three area teams will take a break from region competition and get some weekend mat time.
The duals, hosted by Beaufort High, will also feature Battery Creek, Whale Branch and Bishop England. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.
Beaufort High coach Bill DaMude said the duals will give him a chance to insert some new faces into the lineup, to reward wrestlers who had practiced with the team all year but haven't seen much mat time.
(full story)One slip costs Beaufort High wrestlers against Summerville
The consensus when Tyler Wilson stepped onto the mat Wednesday was that the Beaufort High School wrestling team was in control.
The Eagles, on their home mat against Region 8-AAAA rival Summerville, boasted the edge in the upper weights, as they do against most opponents. And the heavyweight Wilson was poised to deliver Beaufort High's seventh consecutive win in the dual.
But as he prepared to throw Summerville's Robert Larson during the first period, Larson slipped from Wilson's hold and crashed awkwardly onto the mat. Summerville picked up six points after Wilson was disqualified for an illegal slam -- what felt to Beaufort High supporters as a 12-point swing -- and the Green Wave rode the momentum to a 37-29 victory.
(full story)Stratford escapes Beaufort High with pair of 1-point wins
The message was clear, but once the ball was inbounded with less than 20 seconds remaining Tuesday, the Beaufort High School boys basketball coaches could do little.
They instructed the Eagles to switch on screens, to deny a potential game-winning 3-pointer. But the Eagles' best efforts were foiled.
Stratford's Te'Andre Hansley had never made a game-winning shot. But the guard followed the play Tuesday, popping open in the left corner, head-faking his defender and burying a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to lift the Knights to a 48-47 victory on the road.
