2-Minute Drill with Jennifer Giles

Jennifer Giles isn't getting ahead of herself.

A senior on the Bluffton High girls basketball team, Giles has the Bobcats positioned for a run at a share of the Region 7-AAA title and a chance at a deep run deep in the Class 3-A playoffs. She and the rest of Bobcats can claim a share of the region with a win tonight over rival Hilton Head Island High.

"We're just taking it game by game," Giles said Tuesday. "We're just preparing for Friday night."

Bluffton boys beat Hilton Head Prep, wrap up top seed for basketball playoffs

The Bluffton High School boys basketball team came into this week thinking it needed to win its final three regular-season games to clinch the Region 7-AAA championship. They found out Wednesday that wasn't the case.

All the Bobcats needed to clinch the region's top seed for the playoffs was a win Wednesday night in a non-region game against Hilton Head Prep, and they went out and did just that, rolling past the Dolphins, 85-42.

The victory gives Bluffton a better non-region record than challenger Lake Marion, so regardless of what happens Friday, the Bobcats have locked up the league's No. 1 postseason berth by virtue of that tiebreaker.

Bluffton boys win battle with Battery Creek

Bluffton boys basketball coach Brett Macy said two words to his team at halftime Tuesday night before walking out of the locker room.

"Play tough," he said.

The Bobcats led by just four at the break over a Battery Creek team that Bluffton decimated by 40 points just a month ago.

Prep Notebook: Region chase coming down to wire

From staff reports

Girls basketball teams from Bluffton and Hilton Head Island high schools both have another region game to play before the rivals hit the hardwood for a rematch on Friday.

But that doesn't mean it's too early to talk about the region championship.

Bluffton wrestlers lead the way at region tournament

Entering this season, Austin Farmer didn't expect the Bluffton High School wrestling team to be where it is now.

"We didn't think we were going to be that good," Farmer said. "But our team's just pulled together and pulled out so many wins."

What started with a region title and a first-round playoff win over Dreher continued on Saturday, as the Bobcats claimed four champions in the Region 7-AAA individual tournament Saturday at Hilton Head Island High.

Bluffton basketball teams have no trouble with Berkeley

Brett Macy spends his time looking for the little things.

The Bluffton High School boys basketball coach doesn't have much of a choice these days if he wants to keep his team's attention. After all, focus can be difficult for a team that's won eight straight games by an average of 25 points like the Bobcats have.

"As long as we find something each and every game, find a motivating factor, those guys will keep their focus," Macy said.

Hilton Head High hosts region wrestling tournament Saturday

The Hilton Head Island High School wrestling team didn't have the season it was hoping for this year, but the Seahawks are looking toward Saturday's individual tournament with a renewed sense of optimism.

"That's what we've been looking for the latter part of the season," coach Keith Massey said. "We're making sure our individuals are getting better and better every day."

Hilton Head High will host the Region 7-AAA individual tournament Saturday, beginning at 11:30 a.m., with the goal of sending most of its wrestlers to Lower State.

Bluffton edges Dreher in first round of wrestling playoffs

Bluffton wrestling coach John Hollman isn't the biggest fan of his Bobcats' down-to-the-wire finishes.

"Theater plays out nice for the fans, but I just hope people remember me when my heart conditions develop, if and when they do," Hollman said.

For the second consecutive match, the Bobcats entered the final weight class of the evening trailing on the scoreboard. And for the second consecutive match, they came out on top.

Ridgeland's Scott highlights National Signing Day for area players

Wesley Scott, not satisfied with his maroon shirt and black tie, pulled off his grey sweater and tugged on a hooded sweatshirt bearing the Miami (Ohio) University logo.

The Ridgeland defensive end never wavered from his verbal commitment to the RedHawks, making it official Wednesday at the Jasper County School District boardroom. Scott said he entertained no thoughts of other schools since committing last year.

Scott said RedHawks coaches want him at 280 pounds, up from the 235 he weighs now. A new diet and life in the weight room are on the horizon.

Bluffton wrestlers rally past Cane Bay to win region title

Nick Joly just knew deep down that Wednesday's region championship would come down to his son.

Joly -- an assistant coach for the Bluffton High School wrestling team -- had been studying Cane Bay's lineup all week. He clearly realized how evenly-matched the Bobcats and Cobras were.

So when he saw moments before the match began that his son, Levi Joly, would be wrestling in the final weight class of the night, he pulled Levi over to share what he foresaw.

Freshman lifts Hilton Head High girls to OT win at Bluffton

Coach's way isn't always the best way.

Hilton Head High girls basketball coach Dave Greenberg admitted as much Tuesday, after his players schemed the Seahawks' final play-- drawn up for a freshman, no less.

Americal Jenkins rewarded her teammates' faith, making a layup off an inbounds play with one second remaining in overtime to lift the Seahawks to a 47-46 win at rival Bluffton High School.

Bluffton High School receiver Dimitri Lowry has multiple offers to play college football, but it appears one has emerged the favorite.

Lowry said he favors Johnson C. Smith University, a Division II school in Charlotte. The Bobcats senior said he has family in the Charlotte area and likes the school's proximity to the city's professional sports teams.

Golden Bulls coaches told Lowry he would fit well in their up-tempo style. The program competes in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Bluffton girls, boys get basketball wins in different fashions

It wasn't pretty by any means, but Lonnie Roberts certainly will take it.

The Bluffton girls basketball coach spent most of Friday night's game against region rival Battery Creek in frustration. Roberts' team -- which entered averaging 52.6 points per game -- was held to just 11 first-half points and shot an abysmal 18 percent (3 for 17) from the free throw line through the first two periods.

But when it mattered most, the Bobcats came to play.
