Payne was officially introduced to players and parents Monday and stayed to mingle in the lobby after questions were answered inside.

Seahawks sweep host BC

Jacob Coltrane works each day in practice on his long-range shots.

The Hilton Head Island High School sophomore feels it's his duty to knock down 3-pointers when his team needs them, and he was disappointed after not shooting well in recent games. But on Tuesday, the Seahawks' offense caught up to the high-level defense that boys basketball coach Ken Updike had been pushing all year.

Guards worked the ball inside out, moved the ball around the perimeter and enjoyed open looks against Battery Creek's zone. The result was a 62-45 Hilton Head High victory at the Palace.

Van Der Meer's Droop headed to Navy for tennis

Samantha Droop says she became seriously interested in tennis when she was only about 10 years old.

"They'd ask you what you wanted to do and I'd say I wanted to be a tennis player," Droop recalled.

Her goals became much clearer, however, several years later as she saw players close to her heading off to play at colleges across the country. Naturally, Droop set out to do something similar.

Hilton Head High could be down to one finalist for football coach

The search for Hilton Head High's next football coach may be down to just one man.

Bradley Adams of Georgetown High School told the Sun News of Myrtle Beach on Wednesday that he was withdrawing his name from consideration for Hilton Head High's vacant coaching position, but Adams would not confirm that to the Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette.

That would leave B.J. Payne of Lexington, Ohio, as the lone remaining finalist. Payne -- who spent the last six seasons as head coach of the Lexington High Minutemen -- said Wednesday night that he had not yet been contacted by Seahawks athletics director Mark Karen.
