OTHER
• Post 185 of the American Legion will conduct the sixth annual oratorical contest at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island. The public is invited. It is a national competition in which the state winners go to finals in Washington, D.C. The contest is designed to create an interest in and respect for our government. The subject matter will relate to the U.S. Constitution. The national winner will receive an $18,000 scholarship. At the local level, students will compete for a $150 first prize. To participate, students should contact their school counselor or event chairman Bob Heidrich at 843-681-9534.
BLUFFTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
EVENTS
• Lindsay Hill and Emilee Baker's K/1 classes will be "painting the town" of Bluffton from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday. The students will be painting store windows in The Promenade to help decorate the town for the holidays.
• The SIC will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the media center. Baby-sitting will be available for $2 a child.
• The PTO will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria. Baby-sitting will be available for $2 a child.
• "A Chipmunk for All Seasons" and "'Twas the Night before Christmas" will be performed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Bluffton High School auditorium.
ENRICHMENT
• The fourth-graders will participate in the Foresters Program on Friday, sponsored by Engard Real Estate Company and Arbor Day. Susan Jacobsen of Engard will give each student a baby sapling; The Greenery is donating a full-size tree.

• The November 2008 Teacher and Students of the Month are: Sarah Hobson, Teacher of the Month; Caulen Coe, Middle School Student of the Month; Konstantin Von Beringe, A.M. High School Student of the Month; and Rika Park, P.M. Student of the Month.
• Middle School teacher Jenny Zmarzly and senior Chelsea Allen will be participating in the Main Street Youth Theatre production of "A Main Street Christmas" Dec. 4-14. Performances will be at 7 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.
• Senior Alexander Bahr and math teacher Tracy Sklarin will be honored by the Student and Teacher Achievement Award Recognition Program as its November student and teacher of the month. Their achievements will be aired this month in a feature to be presented by WHHI-TV3.
EVENTS
• The Leadership Council, under the direction of Tina Sprouse, will meet at noon Wednesday in the school library.
• Seniors and juniors will hold their respective class meetings Thursday. The morning session will meet at noon and the afternoon session will meet at
12:30 p.m. Seniors will meet in Room 102; juniors will meet in the library.
• The Leadership Council will be sponsoring a bake sale during all class breaks in the school lobby.

• The Advanced Reader Christmas Read and Feed will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the media center.
ACHIEVEMENTS
• Nadine Peters has received her National Board Certification. Since 2002, 63, 831 teachers have completed the rigorous requirements necessary to achieve this honor. The program can take up to three years to complete; Peters completed it and received her certification in one year.
• Athletic director and head football coach Tommy Lewis was selected by SCISA as the Region II-AA Head Football Coach of the Year. He also was selected to coach the South Carolina All-Stars as they face the North Carolina All-Stars in the annual Shrine Bowl in North Carolina.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
ACHIEVEMENT
• Physical education teacher John Townsend has achieved national board certification status. National board certification is the highest level of achievement and certification that teachers can attain.
EVENTS
• Parents and family members are invited to learn more about the district's new math program, EveryDay Math, by attending a parent math night. Teachers and administrators will discuss the program and things parents can do at home to help their child. The programs will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday for first through second grades; and from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday for third through fifth grades. Both programs will be held in the red cafeteria.
• Third through fifth grades will be attending a performance by Hilton Head Dance Theatre on Tuesday at the Visual and Performing Arts Center.

• A Chat With the Principal meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the portable PTA cottage P-4. Principal Sherry DeSimone will meet with parents to discuss school issues, concerns and suggestions, and to answer questions. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

• A meeting for parents of students in the gifted and talented program for all grade levels will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 in the auditorium. Virginia Pratt will talk about the new Beaufort County School District Gifted and Talented recommendations and new developments. A representative from each of the Hilton Head schools will discuss how their school is specifically preparing gifted and talented students for the next level.
• "Growing Up Gifted: An Educational Session for Parents of Bright Youngsters" is being offered by the College of Charleston for parents of gifted and talented students. • The chorus, under the direction of Rick Radcliff, will be performing for the residents of The Seabrook and The Cypress on Thursday.
• The Earthstock 2008 celebration will be held from 1-5 p.m. Saturday on the field next to the tennis courts. The purpose of the event is for students to take on a global perspective by holding a local event as a reminder of how the students came together and broke through barriers during Challenge Day 2008. Admission is $5. T-shirts will be available for $5. There will be live music with disc jockeys Ross and Holly Brown, food, concessions, a bake sale and a silent auction. • A fundraising spaghetti dinner will be held from 5-7 p.m. Dec. 10 in the cafeteria. This is the same night as the chorus, strings and band's winter concert. The money raised will go toward scholarships for eighth-graders to attend the Washington, D.C., trip next spring.

• All students who achieved the all-A or A-B honor roll for the first quarter are eligible to receive one round of free mini-golf at Adventure Cove Family Fun Center. Students must bring a copy of their report card to redeem their reward.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SCHOOL FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS
ACHIEVEMENT
• Brynn Lysinger was named to the honor roll for the first quarter at Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts.

• Students in first through fourth grades will be attending a performance Tuesday at Hilton Head Island High School's Visual and Performing Arts Center. Hilton Head Dance Theatre will be performing.
• Gretchen Keefner will be hosting a Principal's Coffee at 7:45 a.m. Dec. 8 in the media center. Parents are welcome to attend to ask questions or express concerns. An additional meeting for parents will be held at 2:45 p.m. in the media center.
ENRICHMENT
• Second-graders went on a field trip to the Coastal Discovery Museum where they learned about the history of Hilton Head Island and studied animal and plant life native to this area.
• Second-graders celebrated a "Cultural Feast" as a culminating activity to their social studies unit about the major regions of the United States. Food and cultural events were shared.

ACHIEVEMENT
• Dylan Rosser has been selected as a semifinalist for South Carolina in the Wendy's High School Heisman competition.
EVENTS
• The strings program will present its winter concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the middle school gym. All levels will perform.

• The Angel Tree will be available to anyone who would like to adopt a family for Christmas.
• Okatie Elementary sent Operation Christmas Child 94 shoeboxes this year.

SEA PINES MONTESSORI ACADEMY
EVENT
• The Campus Christmas Celebration will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the school. Each classroom will have ornaments for the children to make. There will be Christmas music from Dean St. Hillaire on his steel drums, a chili cook-off, a bake sale, a hot dog cart from Street Meet and hot chocolate for sale. Please bring an unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots. Poinsettias that were ordered also can be picked up at the celebration, and more will be available for purchase. ENRICHMENT
• The Manatees have been making scale models of the decimal system, illustrating the proportional difference of quantities of 1 to 1,000,000 in geometric forms including cubes, prisms and squares.
• Most of the primary rooms have been studying Native Americans, pilgrims and the history of Thanksgiving. The children in the orange room made clay pots with Lily Shultz's father.
• Students in the light green room have been studying the color, texture and appearance of different gourds and have been singing "Five Fat Turkeys."
HELPING HANDS
• Librarian Krista Hanna made the Book Fair at Barnes & Noble a huge success.
• The school thanks all the room mothers who prepared feasts for Thanksgiving in the classrooms.
