BLUFFTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

EVENTS

• The following kindergarten-first grade classrooms will hold friendship and family feasts Tuesday to celebrate the many friendships they have made throughout the year: Mrs. Wersler, 12:30 p.m.; Jenna Thomas and Catherine May, 1 p.m.; and Kristen Hessey, Summer Willis and Kim Young, 1:30 p.m. Parents are invited, and the children get to share their favorite family dishes with one another.

HELPING HANDS

• Supercycles & ATV has donated a Hensim 50cc ATV, youth helmet, goggles and a one-year parts warranty to a school raffle. All proceeds will benefit the field trip fund. Raffle tickets are available in the front office; one ticket for $3, two tickets for $5.

BLUFFTON HIGH SCHOOL

EVENT

• There will be a Parent Teacher Student Community Organization meeting from 6:30-7:30 p.m. today in the atrium. Speakers include Lt. Col. Carothers of the BHS JROTC and Eric Campbell of Young Life. Cheese biscuits and sweet tea will be provided courtesy of Jim 'N Nick's.

CROSS SCHOOLS

EVENTS

• Basketball practice for girls will be from 3:15-5 p.m. today; practice for boys will be from 3:15-5 p.m. Tuesday.

• Family Chapel at the Buckwalter campus will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

• There will be a Grandparents Day celebration from 8:30-11 a.m. Tuesday.

HERITAGE ACADEMY

ACHIEVEMENTS

• Heritage Academy honored the following senior student-athletes at its NCAA early-signing period ceremony: Bethany Dyar, Valentina Fontaine, Michelle Green, Cameron Kennedy, Kelsey Lou-Hing and Tanner Robb. Guest speaker was Mark Gonsalves, CEO of the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy of Hilton Head Island.

• English teacher Melony Bradley and students in her American literature classes have successfully completed their major research projects and oral presentations. Students researched an American poet and their poetry and explored questions about how we learn about a writer from their life experiences and how writers show themselves through their poetry. Scholars honored include Lewis Bickerton, Courtney Collett, Charles Durman, Sean Elliott, Alberto Esponda, Christian Geersten, Renee Henry, Carly Humes, Alex Jacques, Frank Kao, Davis Keough, Minami Levonowich, Evan Littlefield, Kelly Miller, Nicholas Nikol, Alex Pasareanu, Guy Perry, Tony Shin, Miguel Solorzano, Jan Surovic, Kris Tantivirun, John Thomson, Jeffrey Tseng and Konstantin Von Beringe.

EVENT

• The school will sponsor a Pizza Sale on Wednesday in conjunction with Spirit Day activities. Pizza will be supplied by Bravo Pizza. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their Heritage Academy apparel.

HILTON HEAD CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

ACHIEVEMENTS

• Seniors Joey Davis and Abigail Page have been selected by Wendy's as Wendy's Heisman nominees.

EVENTS

• The fourth grade will culminate a study of the New England region in social studies with a trip to Honey Horn on Tuesday where they will learn about settlers, Native Americans and their survival skills. Students will wear pilgrim outfits and picnicking on the grounds.

HELPING HANDS

• The Zonta Club collected more than 225 shoeboxes full of Christmas goodies for children in need in conjunction with Operation Christmas Child. They would like to thank all the school families for supporting this worthy cause.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

EVENTS

• The SIC and PTA will meet at 5 p.m. Dec. 8 in the Yellow Media Center. The chorus will present a winter concert after the meeting.

• Students will be singing at the Community Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. The event will be from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday.

• The chorus will sing holiday music for the residents of Indigo Pines and the Cypress Dec. 11. They also will sing at The Mall at Shelter Cove on the same day.

• The first grade will hold a Thankful for Literacy Fair on Tuesday. Parents and family are welcome. For more information, call Colleen Wynn at 843-342-4301.

HELPING HANDS

• The school is collecting canned goods to support The Deep Well Project. Donations can be brought to the front office at 30 School Road.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL

EVENTS

• Thunderbash will be held Tuesday on the school field for students who sold five boxes or more of cookie dough. Only eligible students who already have returned their signed permission slips to their homeroom teacher can participate. Parents interested in helping can call Roberta Foss at 843-842-2385.

• The annual volleyball game between the staff and the girl's volleyball team will take place Tuesday during second period. Tickets are $4. All proceeds will go toward the eighth-grade Washington, D.C., trip scholarship fund.

• Earthstock '08 celebration will be held from 1-5 p.m. Dec. 6 on the school field next to the tennis courts. Music, food, fun events and auction items will be available.

• A fundraising spaghetti dinner will be held from 5-7 p.m. Dec. 10 in the cafeteria. This is the same night as the chorus, strings and band's Winter Concert. All proceeds will go toward the eighth-grade Washington, D.C., trip scholarship fund.

• A Chat With the Principal meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in PTA cottage P-4. Principal Sherry DeSimone will meet with parents to discuss school issues, concerns, suggestions and answer questions. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

HELPING HANDS

• The school is collecting non-perishable canned goods for The Deep Well Project through today. The homeroom turning in the highest total weight of cans will receive a pizza party and the second-place homeroom will be treated to ice cream in the Bistro. The student council is coordinating this annual can drive.

ACHIEVEMENTS

• All students who achieved the all-A or A-B Honor Roll for the first quarter are eligible to receive one round of free mini-golf at Adventure Cove Family Fun Center. Students must bring a copy of their report card to redeem their reward.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SCHOOL FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS

ENRICHMENT

• Brucie Holler will be an artist in residence for third-graders through today. The residency is funded by the Distinguished Arts Program Grant from the South Carolina Department of Education. The students will each create a collage using mixed media and a variety of techniques using images based on the legacy, geography and history of South Carolina. The imagery are historical documents, birds, plant life, sea life, native peoples, Revolutionary War peoples, designs of the lace workers of South Carolina, and the sculpture of Brookgreen Gardens. The artist studies include Fred Otnes and Robert Rauschenberg, collage painters.

HELPING HANDS

• The Van Landingham Rotary Club will be distributing dictionaries at no cost to all third-graders today. The club members will also give a presentation about community service. Ron Sandlin coordinated this project.

HILTON HEAD PREPARATORY SCHOOL

ACHIEVEMENTS

• Aidan Brougham-Cook and Catherine Zhu participated in the Region Orchestra weekend, which was held Friday and Saturday at West Ashley High School in Charleston. Four-hundred students from the Lowcountry auditioned, and both Aidan and Catherine made it in the top 20 percent. They are now eligible to audition for all-state orchestra.

• Head football coach Ron Peduzzi was chosen as one of 10 High School Football Coaches of the week by the Carolina Panthers Organization. The Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the Week program recognizes high school coaches who, through their hard work and dedication to young people, have made a difference in the lives of their players, community and school, and provides high schools with financial assistance to help maintain and upgrade their football programs. A $1,000 donation will be made in Peduzzi's honor by the Panthers to the football program. He is eligible for the Coach of the Year Award to be presented at the Panthers Dec. 14 game.

• The following students were winners at the SCISA State Student Art and Photography Show: Chris Broadbent, fourth grade, Division 3, second place; Madeleine McDonald, fifth grade, Division 4, honorable mention; Lucy Cram, eighth grade, Division 5, third place; Brittney Parker, 10th grade, Division 6, second place; Kate Brunori, 10th grade, Division 6, third place; Ben Perry, 12th grade, Division 7, first place; and Lindsey Beasley, Division 7, 11th grade, third place.

HELPING HANDS

• The Lower School is participating in the Toys for Tots program in partnership with Parris Island Marine Base. Children should bring in a new toy for the drive by Dec. 19.

MICHAEL C. RILEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

ACHIEVEMENTS

• The names of the first-quarter perfect attendance award winners were placed in a drawing recently for a new bicycle. The drawing winners were Walide Semmoum and Laura Cummins. The bicycles were presented by Holiday Inn Express general manager Steve Toombs and sales manager Barbara Soss. Holiday Inn Express of Bluffton is a business partner with the school and donates two bicycles each quarter for the Perfect Attendance Award.

EVENT

• The pre-K classes will celebrate Thanksgiving with a Thanksgiving feast from 10 a.m.-1 p.m Tuesday.

OKATIE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

ACHIEVEMENTS

• Sprint around the World results for last week are: third grade, 278 miles; fourth grade, 27 miles; and fifth grade, 12 miles.

SEA PINES MONTESSORI ACADEMY

EVENTS

• The Moonshells will host a Parent Book Club at 6:30 p.m. today. The location will be announced. To join, RSVP via e-mail at moonshells@spma.com. The book the club will read is "Montessori Today: A Comprehensive Approach from Birth to Adolescence," by Paula Polk Lillard. The book is available at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon.com, and is readable, anecdotal and less than 200 pages.

ENRICHMENT

• The Mudpuppies are starting studies of life on Earth this week, with living vs. non-living and Five Kingdoms lessons.
